As part of his $36.4 billion state budget proposal for fiscal year 2015, his last, Gov. Deval Patrick wants to extend the state's 6.25-percent sales tax to soda and candy, which would raise a projected $57 million. It's not the first time he has pushed such a proposal, but soda and candy have been popular targets around the country for those who believe taxing them can curb obesity, which, evidence has shown, can lead to bigger health problems. On the other hand, opponents say such a tax reeks of government intrusion. Where do you stand? Please vote in this week's Flash Poll and add a comment:
Do you favor the governor’s plan to extend the state’s sales tax to soda and candy?
